IBS members introduce themselves: Railog GmbH

The RAILOG GmbH was founded in 2001 and is a 100% subsidiary of Schenker today. Within the Schenker Group, RAILOG is the centre of competence for rail-based products and Pan-European rail concepts.

Last year, the RAILOG Group had a turnover of around Euro 200 million. Apart from the German company, the units in Austria, Italy, Sweden, Poland and the Czech Republic contributed to this result. The core business comprises single wagon transport as well as block train systems in Europe as well as block trains to South Eastern Europe. Block trains are daily train connections with fixed timetables, which always transport goods along the same line. The advantages over conventional single wagon transports are manifold. Any type of wagon may be used. The European network of the RAILOG Group is efficient, economical and safe. The rail logistics company controls and steers the block trains. Thus, the consignments are delivered in a targeted and order-related manner.

RAILOG organises the transport of furniture, refrigerators and tv-sets for the customers. But clay, tiles, industrial goods, steel, paper and wood also belong to the range of goods transported. In 2004, RAILOG moved some five million tons of transport goods and managed 160,000 wagons. The individual logistics concepts comprise the rail as well as the road and inland navigation. On request, additional logistical services are offered, such as storage, transhipment or distribution. Thus, RAILOG provides the entire logistical chain and enables customers to avail of doorstep-to-doorstep transports - always connected with the respective flow of information, for instance, tracking of the consignments. In the area of consulting, RAILOG combines years of experience from rail transports, logistics and warehouse management. RAILOG advises the customers as regards the choice of location, infrastructure, the design of the logistical processes, transport alternatives and cost optimisation. Furthermore, the company supports its customers in selecting the wagon and container materials.

The RAILOG offer in detail:

• block train systems from and to South Eastern Europe and Eastern Europe
• combined transport and wagon loading transport
• shuttle train systems Germany/Italy
• developing and implementing project-related logistical solutions across the different modes of transport
• single wagons, wagon groups, special transports
• consulting (transport and logistical concepts)
• consignment tracking
• international wagon management
• warehousing

Since March 2005, the logistics service provider has been offering a regular block train shuttle service to Turkey. The Turkey Container Shuttle (TCS) runs weekly between the cities of Duisburg und Istanbul and transports consumer goods, electrical appliances, automobile parts and chemical products. Together with their partners, RAILOG organise the provision of the containers directly at the shipper’s and delivers them to the recipient in the country of destination. The customers benefit from this offer in more than one way: the departure times are scheduled. The run always lasts for six days and also the cost is predictable thanks to fixed annual prices.

As part of the European logistics group Wincanton, with 25,000 staff members in 15 countries, Wincanton Rhenania, with some 800 staff members in Europe, represents the division specialised in developing logistics and transport
solutions in the areas of European inland navigation, container services and rail traffic for customers throughout Europe.

Rail as the fast track

Wincanton Rhenania has been active in the area of rail freight transport already since 2000 through its subsidiary Unisped, a registered rail transport company. For instance in 2000, Unisped took over the operation of the port train of Worms.

In addition to the regional supply and disposal traffic for the mining industry of the Saarland, the company is now providing services also for track construction. Furthermore, Wincanton Rhenania has been continuing the regional activities of Con Train GmbH, a subsidiary of the Mannheim energy group MVV GmbH, through Unisped, in order to secure the rail operation for major locations in the Rhine- Neckar region also in the future.

“We are convinced that we are able to apply our strengths and experience in rail transport successfully especially in regional activities”, said Dr Wilfried Schumacher, Managing Director at Wincanton Rhenania. “We play a leading role in the development and implementation of rail and water based transport systems. For instance, we have not only implemented several rail projects in Mannheim but throughout Germany and are counting on the rail as an alternative mode of transport to the road.”

Broad range of services

Wincanton Rhenania is also at home with conventional rail forwarding. Every year, a transport volume of more then 200,000 tons is moved. The focus is on block trains carrying iron and steel from Central Europe.

Rail and inland navigation are complementary in many instances and Wincanton Rhenania is the first company that has “gone ashore” successfully with its inland navigation.

The container terminals of Wincanton Rhenania form the central trimodal interfaces between the different modes of transport and in many cases, they are the starting point or the destination respectively for implementing trimodal transport systems. The company offers its customers a continuous terminal chain along the Rhine rail and a market-leading position in container transports along inland waterways and between sea ports with a volume of more than kEUR 300,000 a year.
